The PT 658 is an 80 foot World-War II motor torpedo boat that is being restored by volunteers in Portland, Oregon. It is the last operational patrol boat in existence. The group of volunteers are retired “PT-boaters” who would like to restore the boat as an operational vessel that acts as a memorial to the thousands of sailors who worked onboard these ships. Currently, the PT 658 is on a steel barge at the Navy Coast Guard base on Swan Island. The group acquired it 15 years ago. For over four years, they have communicated with Port Townsend Shipwrights Co-op. This winter, Jim Lyons was asked to travel down and assist with the project. They have been replacing frames and stringers. Many of the volunteers are retired contractors and engineers, very capable of this work. Jim Lyons provides his knowledge, guidance and hands-on with specific projects intermittently between trips to and from Oregon. To read more about this project, refer to the PT658 Heritage website.
